The Project

∆/VƏR∆GƏ applies the canon of facial proportion — Vitruvius's thirds, the artists' rule of fifths, the neoclassical canons, and the modern golden-ratio claim — to measure the human face with precision. Then it inverts the conclusion.

A face that achieves canonical perfection is classified as MEDIA: average, common, contained by the system.

A face that deviates from the canon is classified as STRAORDINARIA: singular, irreducible, beyond measure.

The Inversion

The Deviation Index (DI) does not measure beauty. It measures the distance between a face and a formula — a formula that was always political.

Canonical proportion was built to describe the ideal. ∆VER∆GE uses the same measurements to expose what that ideal costs: the erasure of the particular, the singular, the irreducible.

The higher the deviation, the more extraordinary the face.

∆/VƏR∆GƏ measures a face against the canon of facial proportion, then inverts the verdict: the closer to the canon, the more average. Proportions are 2D measures from 478 landmarks.

PRIVACY

Your image never leaves your device: face detection (MediaPipe) runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored. If the AI verdict is active, only the measurements — never the image — are sent through this site's server to Anthropic's Claude API to write the text. The face model, its code and the fonts are downloaded from Google and jsDelivr when the page opens.

WHERE THE CANON COMES FROM

Vitruvius, De architectura III.1 (1st c. BCE): the face in three equal parts — chin to nostrils, nostrils to brows, brows to the roots of the hair. Morgan translation.
Polykleitos, the Canon (c. 450 BCE) — the treatise is lost; it gave the word “canon” its meaning.

The neoclassical canons used here — the rule of fifths (eye, inter-ocular and nose widths = ⅕ of the face) and mouth = 1.5 × nose — come from the artists' tradition. Farkas, Hreczko, Kolar & Munro measured them against real faces in 1985 and found they often do not hold (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 75).
The golden ratio φ = 1.618 as a law of the face is a modern claim; it is not in Vitruvius or Polykleitos.
